Although I bought this book because my grandparents' story is in it, I decided to read all of it. In the course of reading it a living, breathing early 19th century immigrant community sprang to life. Through the stories of individual families the reader learns what made one nationality of European immigrants leave everything and everyone they knew.In search of opportunity they crossed the Atlantic and the entire U.S.and settled eventually in Anacortes, Washington. The book would make a good movie. The growth and developments of the fishing industry are a corollary for the growth and adaptations of the Croatians. It is fascinating for anyone interested in the settling of the West. While the covered-wagon era is well known, the immigrants who followed in succeeding decades are no less inspiring. First quality paper, printing, historical photos,keyed aerial maps, and the history of individual fishing boats round out the story. My own Arizona friends borrow the book and become as engrossed as if it were a good novel.Product details
