Cold Light of Day Cold Justice Book 3 edition by Toni Anderson Romance eBooks Reviews
“Cold Light of Day” is the 3rd book in Toni Anderson’s Cold Justice series. Each book in the series features a new couple as well as the characters from the earlier books. This could easily be read as a stand alone but the entire series is great and worth reading.
This book centers around Scarlet, a scientist who's father was sent to prison for being a Russian spy. Scarlet never believed her father was guilty and so she sets out to plant a bug in the office of the Russian Ambassador who her father believed was involved. Scarlet is at the Russian Embassy with her best friend, a congressman's daughter and pretending to be her sister. She meets FBI agent and former Navy Seal, Matt Lazio at the party. He is there attending for his boss who couldn't make it. The two are immediately attracted to each other but Scarlet knows that the timing is horrible since she is pretending to be someone else and has an important goal to accomplish.
Unfortunately, Scarlet isn't a spy or an agent nor does she have any expertise in this area and her actions soon put her in danger from some very dangerous people. The FBI isn't sure what she was doing and don't have a vested interest in keeping her safe. Matt steps in to try to keep Scarlet alive and when things don't add up he and his team end up looking into the case her father was convicted for.
I loved both Matt and Scarlet's characters. Matt was a by the book, true believer in the government and the FBI. He believed in the job and in the justice system. He is attracted to Scarlet and can't decide if she is manipulating him or is just naïve. I enjoyed watching the conflict that Matt had between his feelings for Scarlet and his sense of duty. The conflict that he faced as the truth started to surface was incredibly well written. Scarlet was also a strong character. She was rational and loyal and yes a little naïve. She has been alone a lot and is used to no one believing in her or her father but she doesn't give up. She also seemed to understand Matt and was quick to forgive because she understood why he made the decisions he did (no contrived drama) and it wasn't needed.
The chemistry between the two was front and center and had me routing for them from the beginning until the final. Although they fell in love in a matter of days, so much happened in such a short period of time I found myself believing it.
I enjoyed the secondary characters and they were weaved into the story in a way that made them integral to the plot. I also liked that the secondary characters were from the previous books in the series giving us a further glimpse into their lives. The mystery was well thought out and trying to figure out who the spy was had me guessing throughout the book.
This book had danger, romance, political intrigue and suspense. It's a story that touches on loyalty, justice, corruption, politics, betrayal, manipulation and love. Fantastic addition to an already great series.
This book had the potential to be rated at 4 stars but I had many quarrels with this particular book. The first two books in the Cold Justice series were way better. This one seem too juvenile in many aspects and often far fetch. I get it the heroine is 26 but she’s a Doctor in physics so expected her to be more intelligent and diligent. Matt I liked too but his constant inner struggle kind of turned me off. Now I know some ppl believe in love at first sight but to me it’s seemed between them like lust at first sight. What annoyed me was for a woman who has her PhD she was going to offer herself to the Russian mobster in hopes that he won’t kill her. Lastly I believe that the way they discovered the culprits responsible could have been done better. Because I just did not get any inclination that it was them once it was revealed. It’s a good read just not a great one. I, however will continue on reading the next book in the series.
